There was great enthusiasm with the labor unemployment report, though the enthusiasm did not turn into 500+ point up day.
The dollar went up over a point and metals took a big hit. Metal and mining stocks too big hits which kept the indices from printing bigger gains. For setting up higher sustainable gold prices, this gold pullback is healthy.

Largely overlooked was the news of Dubai World creditors refusing delays on interest payments. This will cause issues to the issuers of the CDS "insurance" that is backing the debt.

Some divergences in indices and components; not all components are strong.

Dollar quickly sold off when Bernanke spoke, sending commodities and indices up. March 2008 the dollar index hit 71.05. Over several years the dollar can go to 52 against the basket of peer paper currencies.

GLD 111.63 +1.89. Gold higher with volume. Gold is above all highs so there is no resistance. Anyone picking specific higher numbers is using projections while anyone calling a top at these prices will likely be receiving a margin call. The inflation-adjusted high of gold is around 1760, though that price was traded for less than a day so it won't present much inflation-adjusted price resistance. Gold looks to quickly go to 1200. If gold goes to 1200 the dollar will be in 72s, which will cause energy and other import prices to spike. Year-end gold of 1250 is quite achievable.

Gold looks to test 1130. After closing above 1000 for several weeks, the four-digit round number has been decisively overcome. The risk for shorts is that gold jumps higher to 1200 some night and then goes to 1300.
Platinum had a good week while silver again lagged gold.

Bonds were higher today and the dollar was lower. People are beginning to whisper about the possibility of a worldwide rolling currency crisis. A currency crisis could start in Eastern Europe and drag down the Western European banks that made housing loans in Eastern Europe. Australia, Norway, and Israel have recently raised rates and these may be safer paper currencies.

It's unclear why Fannie is being kept alive. FHA is about to implode: The Federal Housing Administration abruptly delayed the release of a long-awaited independent audit of the financial soundness of the agency, citing potential problems with the accuracy of some of the study's economic models.

Today it was halted briefly when it ran out of shares and then reopened with a premium. Many of the open calls were sold just after the stock reopened. Some are saying this is insider trading. It appears to be more of exploiting a quirk in the ETF structure to force a boundary failure.

The year-old Treasury program to backstop money market funds has ended. The money markets had invested considerable funds in mortgage backed security debt. The losses were causing some funds to "break the buck" which means net asset value dropped below $1. Funds were flowing out of money markets. Treasury backstopped the funds. Now the Treasury backstop is expiring, so expect some risk-averse money to move into CDs and Treasuries. This movement will put demand on Treasuries, thus increasing the prices and reducing the effective interest rates.

Important one-line Bloomberg article. The Federal Reserve must make public reports about recipients of emergency loans from U.S. taxpayers under programs created to address the financial crisis, a federal judge ruled. The Federal Reserve is a private banking cartel that was authorized by Congress in 1913 to set monetary policy. The Fed has limited oversight and has been making fiscal policy and providing loans that are contrary to the Fed's charter. It is time to allow for a full audit of the Fed.

July was a big up-month for the indices.

GDP numbers were released. 2007 GDP was 2% and 2009 GDP is -4%.
Page 2 (bold is mine): The decrease in real GDP in the second quarter primarily reflected negative contributions from nonresidential fixed investment, personal consumption expenditures (PCE), residential fixed investment, private inventory investment, and exports that were partly offset by positive contributions from federal government spending and state and local government spending.

Airline passenger and cargo demand continues to drop. Airline passenger and cargo figures declined again in June with no signs of recovery in sight, according to a report Thursday from the international industry group of the world’s air carriers.
Airlines carried 7.2 percent fewer people and cargo demand was down 16.5 percent in June compared to the same period last year, according to the International Air Transport Association (IATA).

Earlier in the week the dollar was trying to bounce. Today the dollar continued to weaken pushing gold and silver higher.
Some equities are having gaps down at the open. Weighted indices are still holding up and showing green. This could spread and affect headline indices similar to what happened in 2000.

Up and Down do not invest directly in a relevant underlying asset such as stocks, bonds, or houses. Instead, they invest in short-term Treasury securities and overnight repurchase agreements. The paired trusts have a binding agreement to pledge assets to one another over time, according to a predetermined formula that is driven by changes in the housing index, based on the movement of housing prices. This transfer of value back and forth gives "investors" exposure to the direction of U.S. home prices.

The structure resembles a see-saw as the assets are shuffled between the paired trusts. Because of the pairing requirement, an equal number of shares for each fund will be created. Because of the leverage factor, the Up and Down ETFs will experience changes of 3x the changes in the S&P/Case-Shiller Composite-10 Home Price Index. ... They are vehicles for naked gambling. Just bet up or down (black or red). You have a 50% chance of winning.
