China's stranglehold on the tungsten market

SAN FRANCISCO (MarketWatch) -- Used in everything from light bulbs to bullets, tungsten is a metal that's all but monopolized by China, which produces about 85% of the world's supply -- leaving the U.S. at a handicap.

...

One of the largest known deposits outside of China is being developed by Tiberon Minerals in Vietnam, said Roulston. "Tiberon is in the planning/financing stage and expects to start construction soon," according to HRA's Coffin.

Roulston said he toured a small "past-producing mine" earlier this year in Thailand, a country which used to be a major producer of tungsten, which came from small, very high-grade deposits. A small company called Amanta Resources "is looking at it as a possible larger, lower-grade mine," he said. Roulston owns shares in Amanta, as well as Galway and Playfair Mining Ltd.

Meanwhile, Coffin called Vancouver-based Primary Metals Inc. "one of the few survivors of China's period of predatory pricing." It owns a 100% interest in the Panasqueira tungsten mine in Portugal. That mine "has been going for a hundred years and should have enough ore to go for a lot more," said Coffin, who owns shares in PMI and Playfair Mining.

"PMI has a very small float (about 15 million shares out) so it flies under the radar, but it has been very profitable and should continue to be so," he said. The stock is "fairly cheap relative to the profits they can generate," he said, though it is not very liquid.

North American Tungsten owns the Cantung mine site in the Northwest Territories, which the company said is the Western world's largest tungsten supplier. It also owns the Mactung deposit which lies on the Yukon Territory and Northwest Territories border. Coffin said Mactung is the biggest undeveloped tungsten deposit in the West.

Playfair Mining has said it has four "advanced-stage" Canadian tungsten projects. "PLY probably has the best upside since they are just starting to get their story out," said Coffin.

Over in the U.S., Galway Resources has resumed work on the Indian Springs tungsten property in northeastern Nevada that was dropped in the early 1980s by Utah International (later acquired by BHP Billiton (BHP)) because of low prices for the commodity, according to Hinchcliffe.

The new, increased pricing environment for tungsten will enable the company to move quickly into the scoping-study level for the property, likely by March 2007, he said. Other than that property, he said he believes there are no other "serious" tungsten projects in the U.S.

Permitting is a crucial issue at the Indian Springs property, but it's possible that if all goes well with the continued development of the project, Galway could begin mining the deposit in "something like 4 years," said Hinchcliffe.

Higher volume and price not increasing - this looks like distribution. First two days of month payroll 401k withholding money will go into the markets. Sell in next two days, or at least tighten the stops. Start looking for shorts to put on near the election.

Solar Flare And Down Markets

The correction which started following the geomagnetic storm* last weekend seems to be taking on a familiar pattern; namely, the bears get excited and sell the market down, it finds support and the sellers back away.

...

* study by the US Federal Reserve found a close correlation between geomagnetic storms and subsequent corrections in the stock market. "Geomagnetic solar storms occur approximately 35 days per year. For their study, Krivelyova and Robotti [the Fed researchers] correlated the dates of all such storms over the past 70 years with the behavior of 12 of the world's stock markets over the same period. An unmistakable pattern emerged: When the sun flares up, the markets go down. The condition lasts for about six days after the storms end."

Ideas

Fed interest rate pause turned out to be a non-event. Most everything closed slightly in the red - stocks, bonds, dollar, metals. The rest of the week these sectors will go there separate ways.

INTV short at 6. Acting weak.
EZM long at 2.8. Steady moves up. Close above three with good volume and this can move.

SWHC Bullish pattern. Could be double topping. Could pull back to 8.
TAXI Chart broken 50 and 200. Heading lower to 500 day moving average.
NAT New high on okay volume. 10.7% short interest. Shipping stocks have been strong.

VIP Down .66, overbought, triple top, turning down. Had gone up on light volume. Sell.
WAFR Large selling spikes, below 50 day moving average. Short.
GT 11.67. Last week gapped up through 50 day moving average (Marc buy indicator) with volume. Wait for close over 12 to buy.

ORBK In down trend. Below 50 day moving average.
MRX Wait to buy until it closes above 28.

20060803 Wizard Mid-Day

SLW: still looks great for a hold. I expect to see a bit of consolidation here.

EXM: breakout through the 200 DMA and a "W" formation now. Holding well here.

WFR: getting killed and will look to sell.

20060728 Wizard Mid-day

Unsolicited from the "Wiz".

Friday, Jul. 28, 2006 - 2:05 PM ET

SLW: consolidation here with resistance at $10.00. A failure at that level should be viewed as a reversal signal.

BGO: Acting well here. The next resistance level is the $6.00 level.

STJ: Beautiful.

OVTI: Beginning to rally off the 500 DMA. This play might not work so we will monitor. The stochastics are turning up here.

JBLU: Finding support at the lows of July. The bias is still down but moving higher at these levels is suspect.

CTX: Nice candle so far today and still finding the 50 DMA as solid resistance. Great reward/risk setup.

BZH: This rally looks more promising than CTX. We will watch this as we continue on today for additional strength and a possible stop out.

China

Tony writes a newsletter. He says,

Here are some of the companies I’m watching right now ...

Aluminum Corporation of China (NYSE:ACH) is the largest producer of aluminum in China (and the only producer of alumina).

Jiangxi Copper (OTCBB: JIXAY) is in the cat bird’s seat because China’s growing power transmission network means strong demand for highly conductive metal.

Yanzhou Coal Mining (NYSE: YZC) operates six coal mines in China with 1968 million tonnes of proven reserves. Plus, the company provides valuable rail transportation services.

Swire Pacifica (Hong Kong: 0019) is best known for its Cathay Pacific airline. But the company also operates Shekou Container Terminals, one of the fast-growing ports in South China.

Guangshen Railway (NYSE: GSH) operates the main passenger and freight railroad between Guangzhou and Shenzhen — two of the primary manufacturing cities in China — and Hong Kong.

...
Caris published a note on Sun Microsystems (SUNW +1.35%), saying they believe that there is evidence that SUNW's board -- at who's pleasure CEO McNealy serves -- has recently become more active in discussions with line mgmt as well as playing a role in convincing Board member and retired CFO Michael Lehman to return to the position of the co's CFO. When the firm last spoke with Mr. McNealy about his plans, he indicated that he was staying on "until the job is done." They said he concurred that finishing this job meant at least three things: Reestablishing product superiority, regaining control over costs and igniting demand in a broad and balanced customer base. They believe these three criteria have largely been met. Accordingly, firm will not be surprised if McNealy does indeed decide to step down. They think that leaving Sun in 2003 could very well have spelled doom for the co. In 2006, they suspect that the co could move on, perhaps to even greater accomplishments.

PayPal Stops Sales At Gold Info Site

The quick ramp-up of sales from jsmineset.com caused PayPal to stop processing their transactions. The site has been too successful selling their CDs!

Wednesday, March 01, 2006, 2:17:00 AM EST

Online CD Sales

We are still waiting for PayPal to approve the reactivation of our online payment feature for Jim Sinclair’s Gold Compendium. These folks (PayPal - an E-Bay subsidiary) redefine "arbitrary" in terms of their dealings with common folk like us.

In any event, we are all caught up with our advanced mail orders (which were payable by check) and are working on mailing out the online orders we received before PayPal concluded that our sales volume made us suspect.

We haven't given up with online sales yet and invite suggestions from readers who have had success dealing with this internet behemoth which is becoming a fossil before its time.
